Mental Health Advocacy Ministry

The Cross Mental Health Advocacy Group is a team of sisters and brothers in Christ working to support the well-being and quality of life of the community through education, advocacy, service and community partnership.

Nearly 50% of us experience at least one mental health condition our life, and almost all of us experience mental health challenges at some point. Symptoms do NOT indicate weakness, yet we are taught to deny it if we have symptoms of depression, anxiety or substance abuse. We are NOT taught that joining with others during times of trouble is a sign of strength.  The words of Micah remind us “to act justly and to love with mercy.” This requires us to advocate for social issues affecting mental health, and to provide support for those of us who face challenges to well-being at any time.

Our ministry works to de-stigmatize mental health difficulties, and promote wellness in mind, body and spirit.  We invite members of our church family and the community to participate in an ongoing discussion of mental health, and to share stories of success that offer affirmation, encouragement, and hope.

Our ministry’s activities include: • Adult forums to identify and talk about mental health issues
• Contemporary Witness testimonials
• Promotion of community advocacy events, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness performance of “Pieces: In My Own Voice”
• Involvement in the Bread of Healing Clinic at Cross
• Lay support and assistance with pastoral care to identify and encourage mental health resources
• Discussion for how to develop partnerships to advocate for social justice and promote well-being of youth and adults

Our church family has a wealth of wisdom, love, support and experience. Our ministry seeks to help us work together in faith to keep our spirit strong!

Please let us know if you would like to talk or would like to participate in our ministry!  Feel free to contact Matt Jandrisevits at mjandris@gmail.com for more information.
